A ONE ACT PLAY
2 F / 2
M Bill would religiously call my mother, Mary B, every Sunday. It took a two-drink minimum. The first drink gave him the courage to make the call; the second provided the courage not to hang up. Mary B was a character, just about every family has one like her. Bill is an only child who finally marries and leaves home. Laugh along when Mary B calls Bill, and his wire Peg answers the phone and after saying “hello” hears “who’s this?” Even after 30 years of marriage.

What a spectacular show, Bill! I believe Kevin said it best when he said it made him want to call his parents and tell them to take care of themselves. It sparked so many conversations and was just such a funny, moving piece.

Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your play. My parents and I went Friday evening and had a great time! There are parts of your story about your mother that reminded us of my grandmother (my dad’s father) and we laughed and cried sharing the memories.

Your ability to tell the story of your mother’s amazing life and your trials in your relationship combined sharp observation, wonderful timing and indisputable affection. While her particular statements and actions were distinctly hers, the dynamics of your relationship was universal in its appeal.

Not only does Two Drink Minimum stir the soul, the show created really takes said soul on an emotional journey that rewards with both laughter and tears.

Over the course of the play, we start to understand why so much liquid courage may be necessary in preparing to talk to Mary B. Tough but outrageously sensitive, independent but needed, persistent, domineering, funny, pragmatic, demanding and idiosyncratic. Bill’s mother could make even the simplest conversations difficult at every turn.

There is a lot of heart behind this work. The writer clearly loves his mother and seeks to understand her difficulties. The play, as it stands, encourages viewers to consider and appreciate their own families, particularly as they age or face illness.
